Are Porcelain Countertops Good and What Should I Know About Them?

Porcelain countertops are becoming one of the biggest trends in both residential and commercial design. In 2020, we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of design projects that incorporate porcelain slabs. But why has it become so popular?

Here’s everything you need to know about porcelain countertops: the benefits, the cost, the endless application possibilities and more!

Is Porcelain Good for Countertops?

Our short answer is: YES! Porcelain is fantastic, durable and beautiful! But why?

Our long answer is this: Porcelain countertops are great as they are composed of strong and durable elements that are resistant to staining, scratching, chipping and high temperatures. It is so strong, in fact, that we can confidently state it is one of the most durable countertops on the market! On the scale of hardness (Mohs), porcelain ranks around a 7, 8 or 9, while granite ranges only from a 6 to 7!

Porcelain vs. Marble

So, what is the difference between porcelain and marble? Visually, these two materials seem to have a lot of similar characteristics, but when looking at the finer details these two countertops differ quite drastically.

First of all, marble is wonderful, timeless, classic and an overall visually stunning surface. The look of many porcelain slabs is inspired by the unique and effortless design that we know and love from marble. Porcelain countertops, in a way, are a modern-day version of marble because they are made to replicate marble’s luxurious design but provide the benefits that marble cannot.

Marble is a very soft material that is prone to etching, staining, scratching and is not very resistant to high temperatures. It is unable to defend against a lot of bacteria and day-to-day activities, making it not the most ideal kitchen countertop. With marble comes a lot of beauty, as well as a lot of worry, but with porcelain you can feel at ease knowing that your countertops will not damage or stain easily.

How Much Do Porcelain Countertops Cost?

As with any product, the price of porcelain countertops will vary. However, you will be pleased to find that the cost is more reasonable than one may think!

Porcelain slab tiles vary from around $60 to $100 per square foot. This price range changes in terms of size, application, edge design, etc. With all of the benefits that porcelain has to offer, we think this is almost a steal! Compared to other materials, such as granite countertops, they are more affordable while providing more benefits. Granite can be found at a higher cost and do not provide the durability that porcelain does.
